Why the PS5 got more expensive

Console pricing has one rule that held for thirty years: hardware gets cheaper as manufacturing matures, because the money is in software. The PS5 broke it. Two increases took the Disc edition from $499.99 to $649.99, and the Digital edition now costs what the flagship cost at launch. In work hours, the same machine went from 16 hours to 21 at the median US income — five hours of your life added to the price of a console that has not changed. Waiting, the strategy that always worked, now costs money.

For

  • The hardware itself is unchanged and mature — the 2026 console is the same product that launched in 2020
  • Resale values held up unusually well, partly because new prices kept rising
  • The Digital edition at $599.99 is still the cheapest way into the generation

Against

  • +$150 over launch, or +30% — the first PlayStation ever to move that direction
  • Five extra hours of median-income work, and 21 extra hours at the federal minimum wage
  • Waiting for a price cut is no longer a strategy: the last two moves were both upward

Has a console ever gotten more expensive before?

Not like this. Consoles historically get cheaper across a generation because the profit is in games. The PS5 is the first PlayStation to cost more than it did at launch.
