What Is the Cost of Tesla Ownership?

The price right now

$36,990.00 — 2026 Tesla Model 3, starting price

Prices as of July 2026. The purchase price is sourced and so is the EV cost structure, but our dataset has no separate AAA annual total for the EV category — only the $11,577 all-vehicle average. The EV lines below are therefore described in direction rather than given invented numbers.

Depreciation and insurance — where EVs losevariesBoth run higher than the average category, per AAA. On a normal car depreciation is already the largest single line, so this is the offset that eats the fuel saving. AAA Your Driving Costs 2025 — EV cost structure and 16.7c/kWh average charging

Is a Tesla cheap to own?

The fuel saving is real and it is the part everyone quotes — charging at 16.7 cents per kWh, plus the second-lowest maintenance costs of any AAA category. What the fuel argument leaves out is the other side of AAA's own structure: EVs carry higher depreciation and higher insurance, and on a conventional car depreciation is already the biggest line at 37% of total cost. So an EV does not obviously shrink the $11,577 a year, it redistributes it into categories you feel less often but pay more of. The purchase is the number that dominates anyway: $36,990 is 1,200 hours of median-income work, about thirty work weeks, before a single mile.

For

  • Lowest fuel cost of any AAA category, at an average 16.7 cents per kWh
  • Second-lowest maintenance costs — fewer moving parts and no oil changes
  • The savings land on the two lines you actually experience as bills, month to month

Against

  • $36,990 to buy ≈ 1,200 hours of median-income work — about thirty work weeks
  • Higher depreciation and insurance than the average category, per AAA — the offsets to the fuel saving
  • Depreciation is already the largest cost of car ownership, so a category that worsens it starts from behind
