$499.99 was the price, and it never got better
Every console generation before this one made launch buyers look impatient: wait two years and the same machine costs less. The PS5 inverted that. $499.99 in November 2020 turned out to be the cheapest the Disc edition would ever be, and the $399.99 Digital edition was the cheapest entry point this generation will ever have. Six years on, the same hardware asks $649.99 — five more hours of median-income work, twenty more at the federal minimum. The one asterisk runs the other way: for the first two years the sticker price and the paid price were often different numbers, because you had to find one first.
For
- Launch buyers paid the lowest price the console has ever had, $150 below today's
- The $399.99 Digital edition was the cheapest way into this generation, ever
- Sixteen hours of work in 2020 bought six years of use — and a machine that has since gone up in price
Against
- Stock was scarce into 2022, so $499.99 was often a floor rather than what people actually paid
- The usual strategy of waiting for a price cut turned out to be the wrong call for the first time
- At the federal minimum wage $499.99 was 69 hours of work — and $649.99 today is 90
