The gap is bigger than the one you'll read
Almost every comparison of these two consoles quotes a $250 difference. That figure quietly compares a Pro with no disc drive against a Disc edition that has one. Put them on equal terms and the Pro costs $979.99 against $649.99 — a gap of $329.99, which is 11 hours of median-income work and 45.5 hours at the federal minimum wage. Divided across the roughly 22 titles with PSSR enhancement, that is exactly $15.00 per enhanced game. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on how many of those 22 you actually intend to play: if it is three or four, you are paying somewhere near $100 a game for a better-looking version of something the base console already runs. If you buy digital anyway, drop the drive and the gap falls back to $250 — which is the one case where the widely quoted number is the right one.
For
- If you buy games digitally the disc drive is irrelevant, and the gap really is $250
- The Pro took the same $150 increase as the base PS5, so it hasn't drifted further out of line with the range
- $15.00 per PSSR-enhanced title is a knowable per-use price, which is more than most hardware upgrades offer
Against
- Like for like it is $329.99 more, not $250 — 11 hours of median-income work and 45.5 at the federal minimum
- The enhancement applies to around 22 titles, so the per-game cost climbs steeply if you only play a few of them
- At $899.99 before a drive, the Pro is 29 hours of median-income work and 124 hours at the federal minimum wage
Frequently asked questions
Is a PS5 Pro worth it?
It depends how many PSSR-enhanced titles you play. Matched like for like against the Disc edition the Pro costs $329.99 more, and around 22 titles carry the enhancement — exactly $15.00 each if you play them all, far more if you play three.
How much does a PS5 Pro cost?
$899.99, up from the $749.99 it launched at in November 2024. It has no disc drive; adding one costs $79.99, bringing the total to $979.99.
Does the PS5 Pro come with a disc drive?

How many hours of work is a PS5 Pro?
About 29 hours at the median US income of $30.83 an hour, or 32 hours with the disc drive included. At the federal minimum wage that is 124 and 135 hours.
